What is Ohajiki? A children's game played with shells pebbles, coin-shaped glass pieces, or other small flat objects. The name derives from the Japanese verb "hajiku" meaning "to flick". The game is played by scattering pieces on a flat surface, such as a tatami matted floor; players then take turns claiming them by hitting one piece against another piece with the flick of a finger. The player with the most pieces wins. Ohajiki derived originally form dangi, a game introduced into Japan from China in the 8th Century. It was played at court and by the nobility, In ancient times it was called ishihajiki("pebble flicking") because it was played with small pebbles. |
