HAPPI (HANTEN)
"Happi" is a workman's livery coat. This kimono-style short, slip-over jacket chiefly worn by workmen, which commonly
has the crest or the name of the employer on the back. Happi is also worn by youths during festivals, such as when
they bear a portable shrine on the shoulders. The traditional workmasn's coat is also called "Hanten"

Histroy of SASHIKO : Garments made of one or more layers of Indigo-dyed hemp or cotton fabric and quilted in various patterns for the purpose of mending, reinforcement, warmth or decoration. Also, a style of weaving in imitation of this stitching. Originally, simple running stitches were made in straight lines to reinforce areas of work garments, cloths and rags that were apt to wear. Later, as the decorative element became increasingly important the stitches became more elaborate, each region of Japan developing distinct designs. Sashiko stitching runs in all directions, attaching two layers of fabric so that the front and reverse sides show the same patterns. Although since the Meiji period (1868-1912) mass-produced fabrics have become more accessible and the need to recycle fabrics has virtually disappeared, the decorative use of Sashiko has survived under the influence of the mingei (Fork Crafts) movement led by Yanagi muneyoshi.
