Kanzashi : Ornaments used in traditional Japanese Hairstyles. The immediate ancestor of the kanzashi is said to be the kazashi, a hair ornament of the medieval period (mid-12th - 16th centuries) During the 18th and 19th centuries, as new hairstyles became popular, kanzashi came into wide use, and many were products of fine artistic workmanship. Materials such as wood, bamboo , tortoiseshell, ivory , glass and metal were used.
