The Boys' Festival (May 5th)

People hoist carp-shaped streamers on a tall bamboo pole outdoors, take a hot bath with iris leaves floating in it and eat rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo (Chimaki)/oak leaves (Kashiwamochi). Boys are expected to be as energetic as the carp and to surmount all obstacles in their path to fortune, just as carp ascend the strongest rapids. It is the traditional custom to display warrior dolls and miniature suits of armour on a three tiered stand.
